I am very proud to have completed my training as a UK SMART Recovery facilitator and hold a licence with UK SMART Recovery to use the SMART tools with my client within my private counselling practice.
I also volunteer and facilitate a weekly UK SMART Recovery meeting on a Wednesday, the details of which are below:
UK SMART Recovery is a group where honest and confidential discussion helps us to change any addictive or compulsive behaviour that are a problem.
We view our problem behaviour as our own responsibility and the result of choices we have made. What we chose to do, we can also choose to stop.
UK SMART Recovery advocates personal choice. People make a choice to engage in problematic and addictive behaviours. They can also make a choice to stop. Everyone has the power of choice and can choose to change unhelpful or harmful behaviours.
People are not their behaviours so language like ‘addict’ and ‘alcoholic’ is not used. We don’t use labels such as ‘bad’ or ‘antisocial’ in our group. We are more than our problem behaviours. People seeking recovery are empowered to choose what works best for them, from a ‘tool box’ of methods demonstrated in meetings and training materials.
Participants are free to engage with other services or mutual-aid groups which they find helpful while also attending UK SMART Recovery Meetings; there is no single pathway to recovery and it is important that each person has their own recovery journey, done in their own way that feels best for them.
Once a healthy, positive and balanced lifestyle is achieved, participants are free to move on and pursue other goals in their life.
UK SMART Recovery gives us skills to take control of our lives. We learn to:
At Meetings we check-in, set an agenda, have a discussion and then check-out. You can join in or just listen.
I also then offers attendees to stay for a guided relaxation using the Peter Hess Sound Massage Therapy Bowls, to help alleviate the stress that can accompany a recovery journey. This is offered at every meeting and attendees can choose to stay or not and this is their own choice at every meeting. You may want to stay one week but not another!!
For more information or if you have any worries I can be contacted directly at info@safeandsoundcounselling.co.uk, or there is a lot more info, such as the tools, very helpful and informative articles, as well as a list of all current UK SMART Recovery meetings, including online ones (as some people choose to attend more than one meeting during more difficult periods) This can all be found on the website Self-Help Addiction Recovery | UK Smart Recovery
